Antrea Dowd
Antrea Dowd has spent more than 30 years in healthcare, and she jokes that her resume started at 14 years old, when she was a candy striper. Early exposure to patient care set the course for a career that would take her from clinical roles as a CNA and Medical Assistant into education, leadership, and now, division management of Allied Health Partnerships.
As an instructor, Antrea taught Medical Assistant and Medical Billing & Coding programs, and led Health Occupations Students of America teams to the national stage six times. Named "Teacher of the Year" for Chicago Public Schools", a recognition that reflected not just her subject-matter expertise, but her ability to connect with students and prepare them for real careers in healthcare.
Antrea went on to earn her Master's in Public Administration. But an early leadership lesson taught her more than any degree could: she once believed her title gave her authority, until she was humbled to learn that leading isn't about the title. It's about the people. Meeting team members where they are, rather than measuring them only by metrics, created a different kind of leader. When she focused on developing people first, she saw them start working harder, caring more about their roles, and showing up with clarity and a smile. That became the foundation of her philosophy: Purpose. Presence. People.

Antrea has also sat on the other side of the patient care equation. When her mother became ill, she saw firsthand how much presence matters, not just clinical skill. "The illness was horrible," she says, "but my experience with the staff was great. If you care about people, be present." She carries that philosophy in how she builds her own teams today.

Antrea is a vocal advocate for supportive leadership as the key to shaping the future of healthcare. Whether she's hosting a podcast conversation, conducting an ABHES audit, or mentoring emerging leaders, her mission stays the same: develop encouraging models that teach psychological safety before leaders need it, so the next generation of healthcare professionals can break the cycle of turnover, role immaturity, and low emotional intelligence, and build careers rooted in purpose, like their mentor, Antrea.
